Collecting ballot papers from the Tiwi Islands
In May 2022, a travel agency asked us to help Australian electoral officials to collect federal ballot papers from remote Northern Territory communities that couldn’t be reached by scheduled services. Faced with a lack of local operators, the race was on to find a suitable aircraft that could complete the charter before the election deadline.
Urgently needed for a series of life-saving transplant operations in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the organs had to reach their recipients as quickly as possible once they’d been removed from the donors. We worked around the clock to coordinate this complex charter and ensure the operations went ahead on time.
Our Solution
Route: Darwin > Pirlangimpi > Milikapiti > Wurankuwu > Minjilang > Warruwi > Darwin > Wurrumiyanga > Pickertaramoor
Aircraft: Cessna 404 Titan
After assessing each of the airstrips on the route, we reached out to operators in other states to find a suitable aircraft. Within hours, we’d source a Cessna 404 Titan that had sufficient payload for the passengers and ballot papers and could land in each location. The aircraft and crew were quickly mobilised to ensure the sensitive cargo was collected in time.
