Jaipur
The Pink City has dazzled visitors since it was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727. The Rajasthani capital is packed with impressive forts and Mughal palaces that provide a grand backdrop for a wedding celebration.
Spend a morning wandering around the Old City and discover the beautiful palace, a former royal residence set in sprawling courtyards and gardens. In the afternoon, visit the iconic Amber Fort just north of Jaipur or other attractions including the Jantar Mantar Observatory, Nahargarh ‘Tiger’ Fort, Jaigarh Fort and Monkey Temple.
Jodhpur
From the Pink City to the Blue City of Jodhpur. Its nickname is no exaggeration, as most houses in the old city are painted in shades of coastal blue. This, along with its forts and palaces, temples and havelis, makes for a beguiling wedding destination.
Jodhpur Airport is just 5km from the city centre, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city once you’ve checked into your hotel. Discover historic cannonball imprints on the Mehrangarh Fort, which stands 125 metres above the city’s skyline, and visit the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, which is still home to the city’s royal family.
Udaipur
Packed with luxury hotels and scenery that’s so stunning it featured in the James Bond movie Octopussy, it’s no wonder Udaipur is a popular choice for those planning to get hitched in India.
Why not stay in the home of 007 himself while you’re there? Built during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh in the early 20th Century and now a five-star hotel, Shiv Niwas Palace sits on the banks of Lake Pichola. Another option for Bond fans is the Taj Lake Palace, which features as Octopussy’s home in the movie.
Goa
If you want to escape the city for a coastal Indian wedding, head for the golden sands of Goa. This tiny island state is famous for its pristine beaches, buzzing party resorts and fabulous restaurants, making it a great destination for beachfront nuptials.
Goa is also steeped in history, from ancient dynasties, empires and sultanates to its more recent role as a stop on the Hippie Trail in the mid-1900s. The former Portuguese colony and spice trading centre still attracts backpackers, but is also home to a plethora of upmarket hotels where you can unwind before the big day.
Andaman Islands
Scattered through the Indian Ocean on the ancient trade route between India and Myanmar, the Andaman islands are a far-flung utopia of palm-fringed beaches, tropical rainforest and some of Asia’s best surfing and diving – the dream spot for a wedding.
Most visitors begin their stay on South Andaman, home to bustling capital Port Blair and the international airport, but from there there are 36 inhabited islands to choose from. The most popular is Havelock, with its legendary beach and incredible diving and snorkelling, while quieter Neil Island offers a more rustic experience. With no direct international flights to the Andamans, a private jet charter is the fastest and most convenient way to get there.
