The most luxurious geothermal spa hotels in the world

Geothermal pools can be found on every continent – even Antarctica. Also known as hot lakes, since Roman times humans have used them for healing purposes, combining their natural heat with cold water to relieve muscular aches and pains, detox the skin, improve metabolism and increase circulation.

Fast-forward to the modern day and many of these rare natural wonders are open to the general public. While some are used primarily as tourist attractions, many are reserved for those visiting one of the exclusive spa hotels built around a hot spring. We’ve collated some of the most luxurious geothermal spa hotels around the world to inspire your next group or private jet charter with us.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, Iceland

One of the most famous geothermal spas in the world, southwestern Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is always gently steaming at around 37-40°C. Every day, hundreds of people wade into the restorative water that comes from 2,000 metres underground, scooping up silica mud for a rejuvenating face mask or ordering a drink from the swim-up bar in the hope of glimpsing the legendary Northern Lights.

While some leave the ethereal lagoons after a few hours, others stay for longer in the adjacent hotel. Carved into the 800-year-old lava field, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon reflects the volcanic landscape with blue-and-green carpets and solidified lava fireplaces. Minimalist guestrooms overlook the lagoon or moss-covered lava fields and the restaurant’s open kitchen serves Icelandic tasting menus.

The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal, Costa Rica

Perched in the jungle 1,000 feet above the Arenal Valley with spectacular views of the iconic Volcano, The Springs Resort & Spa is one of Costa Rica’s most luxurious lodges and boasts breathtaking views of the volcano from every room.

Guests can touch down on the 165-acre property’s helipad before heading straight for the 28 hot springs dotted through the grounds, which range from large pools to intimate lagoons. Then tear yourself away from the enormous spa to spot pumas at the resort’s wildlife rescue and explore Costa Rica’s adventure capital with river tubing, kayaking and rock climbing.

Amanemu, Japan

Perched on a forested hilltop in Ise-Shima National Park with views across the Pacific Ocean, Amanemu is a ryokan-inspired destination spa where ancient Japanese tradition meets modern minimalist design.

Designed around a large hot spring, the resort’s 2,000-square-metre spa offers bespoke treatment programmes that embrace the mineral-rich water’s restorative power. Back in whichever of the 30 suites you’ve chosen, you’ll find a soaking tub with a special tap for running hot spring baths in the privacy of your room.

Bagni di Pisa, Italy

The 18th-century summer home of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, today Bagni di Pisa is a historic spa resort. Nestled between healing hot springs and the baths of Mount San Giuliano near the medieval town of Lucca, this magnificent former palazzo boasts views of nearby Pisa’s famous leaning tower and the scenic coast.

The hotel’s storied past lives on in its original artwork, ornate frescoes and rich tapestries. But while the chic decor is certainly a highlight, the hotel’s stand-out spa is its most popular attraction. Carved out of two original bath houses fed by thermal waters, here you can enjoy holistic massages and unwind in a natural steam room set in its own grotto.

Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena, Spain

Down towards India’s southern peninsular is the coastal location of Kerala and the five-star Kumarakom Lake Resort. Here, modern comforts are wonderfully mixed with Kerala’s 16th-century traditional architecture to produce a unique experience by the warm waters of India’s western shoreline.

As well as beautifully constructed suites that come with inviting private pools, guests can also stay on their very own exclusive houseboat that drifts along the banks of Kerala.
